Philippa G. Samworth Award for Advancement of Women in the Legal Profession
The Philippa G. Samworth Award for Advancement of Women in the Legal Profession is named for one of CDL’s founding members. Each year the CDL recognizes a member show has demonstrated; commitment to advocating the inclusion and promotion of women in the legal profession through activity has a visible, tangible or measurable impact on the perception of attitude toward, and respect for the treatment of women, and fostering women’s initiatives and promoting positive mentoring relationships with other women in the legal profession; and/or leadership in the development of measures to fight gender discrimination and prejudice in the profession.
Eligibility
Any individual in good standing within the legal profession in Canada is eligible for nomination. Preference will be given to members of Canadian Defence Lawyers (CDL).
Individuals who are elected officials at the municipal, provincial, or federal level, or who are appointed members of the Canadian Senate, are not eligible.
Nominations
Any CDL member may submit a nomination.
Selection Process
Nominations will be reviewed by an Awards Jury comprised of the 2026 Nominating Committee.
To support the review process, each nomination should include the nominee’s CV and at least two letters of support outlining their contributions in accordance with the award criteria. The Committee may also consult, on a confidential basis, with CDL members in the nominee’s region.
Presentation
The award will be presented at the CDL President’s Dinner or at a special event.
