CDL Pub Night and Book Drive: Reading is FUNdamental
The Toronto Chapter of the CDL Young Lawyer's Division is hosting a pub night fundraiser to support The Children’s Book Bank (http://www.childrensbookbank.com/) a registered charity dedicated to building literacy in low-income communities. The Canadian Defence Lawyers recognizes that access to age appropriate reading material outside of the classroom is essential in helping children reach their potential. To support this goal, members are invited to come with a book and stay for a drink with their friends and colleagues.
The Children’s Book Bank is a local charity that has operated a location in the Regent Park/St. James Town neighbourhood of Toronto since 2008. It provides free books and literacy support to children who might otherwise not have access. The Children’s Book Bank collects gently used children’s books from families who have finished with them and from publishers and retailers who cannot use them and distributes them through their storefront and across the city of Toronto. The Book Bank has expanded its reach and now provides additional books and literacy materials through community centres, schools, and health clinics in low-income neighbourhoods throughout the city.
In 2017 the Book Bank provided over 127,000 books to children across Toronto.
Members are invited to attend at TUNDRA in the lobby of the Toronto Hilton, 145 Richmond Street West on January 30, 2019 5:30 -7:30. Please RSVP below or by emailing maryellen@cdlawyers.org. Two drink tickets and appetizers compliments of CDL.
There is no cost of admission but members are encouraged to bring a book to donate to the charity. A donation box will be available at the event for books. A helpful guide on what books are suitable can be found here: http://www.childrensbookbank.com/donating-book-drives/. We will also collect cash donations for the Children's Book Bank.
