Recipient of the 2021 Lee Samis Award of Excellence

The Board of Directors of Canadian Defence Lawyers invites you to a Luncheon honouring our 2021 Lee Samis Award recipient John P Barry, ONB, K.C. on September 12, 2021. The event will also include a presentation by The Honourable J.C. Marc Richard, Chief Justice of New Brunswick.  Chief Justice Richard will present “The Ever-Growing Importance of the Rule of Law”. 

We hope that you will join us to recognize John Barry’s achievements at an enjoyable, informative, and entertaining afternoon at the Delta Hotel, 39 King Street, Saint John.  The Presentation begin at 11:45 and Lunch at 12:30 (business attire).

The Lee Samis Award of Excellence was named for the founding President of CDL to recognize exceptional contributions and/or achievements by members of CDL:

- to the legal profession in general; or
- to jurisprudence in Canada on the law of insurance; or
- to law or development of the law of insurance in Canada; or
- a significant law-related benefit to CDL and/or the insurance industry.

John P. Barry, KC is counsel in the Saint John office of Cox & Palmer.   John has been recognized annually in both Best Lawyers in Canada and the Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory since both ratings were established. Throughout his legal career, John has held numerous positions and served on provincial and national legal committees. John is a true community leader who has freely given of his time and energy to a number of health advocacy groups at the local, provincial and national levels. John’s extensive knowledge and skill in the health field led to his appointment as chair of the Legal Counsel Section of the Federation of Medical Licensing Authorities of Canada in 2000 and in 2006. His tireless work as a Council Member for the Law Society of New Brunswick has spanned four terms, including ground-breaking work as co-chairman on the Integration of the Practice of Law in the Two Official Languages Committee.  John was awarded the highest honour of the Province, Order of New Brunswick in 2016.
