Join us as the CDL Young Lawyers Division continues the popular and informative Practical Skills Series! This seminar will provide participants with invaluable insight, strategies, and methods from experienced counsel and industry experts for use in chambers/at motions.

The 90-minute lunch-time discussion will cover:
 
Step 1 – Preparing your Written Materials
Discussion topics will include everything from relevant rules in the Rules of Civil Procedure and the Supreme Court Civil Rules; how to properly prepare your motion record/application record, affidavits, factums/written arguments and books of authorities; how much case law to include in your factum/written argument; how best to organize your submissions and case law in your factum/written argument; and timelines for service and filing.
 
Step 2 – Preparing Your Oral Presentation
Discussion topics will include everything from preparing with the use of a script vs. point form; how well you should know the case law (that helps and hurts your case); how to anticipate and prepare for questions from the Associate Judge/Judge; and how to anticipate and prepare for opposing counsel’s arguments.
 
Step 3 – Arguing Your Contested Motion
Discussion topics will include everything from how to best present your case; how to organize your thoughts; how to respond to the Associate Judge/Judge ‘interrupting’ your submissions to ask questions; how to know when to stop; whether you should deliver a reply; how and when to use case law in your oral presentation and some tips on how to ‘wow’ your Associate Judge/Judge.
