Have your Say in Hearsay – Call for Submissions
 
Mark your calendars! The next issue of Hearsay launches on December 2, 2025. We invite you to submit your contributions by November 19, 2025.
 
Have your say, by contributing to the following:

• Letters to the editor – have your say about events, trends and happenings across Canada’s Legal Sector (up to 250 words).
• Your Member News – did you win a case, get a promotion, or celebrate another professional or personal milestone? (up to 250 words).
• Substantive Law White Papers or Articles - Submit a feature length article exploring your area of expertise, a successful defence strategy, or other topic of professional interest to Canadian Defence Lawyers (up to 2500 words). Please note a maximum of four articles will appear in each issue.
• Additional Resources – send us the link to your newsletter, blog, podcast, etc. (must focus on the practice of law/defence law topics).
• Did we miss anything? Do you have something you’d like to contribute Hearsay? Submit a brief summary of your proposed work for editorial review.

 
Please send all submissions c/o danielle@cdlawyers.org by November 19, 2025 at 5pm EDT; we appreciate timely indications of your intention to submit Substantive Papers or Articles for planning purposes. Please take note of the editorial guidelines:
 
Canadian Defence Lawyers prides itself on being a welcoming, inclusive and collegial community; while healthy debate is encouraged, contributors are also encouraged to maintain a positive tone, critiquing ideas and events, not individuals.
 
The Editors will have final say on all content included in the Hearsay, and will be answerable to the Board for those decisions.

Letters to the Editor

• CDL invites members in good standing to submit a letter to the editor of a maximum of 250 words. On a topic of your choosing, which may include: review of a CDL event or session, (polite) rebuttal of an article from a previous issue of Hearsay, an opinion on a topic or event relevant to the Civil Defence Bar in Canada.
• Use simple language, short sentences and make use of bullet points and other punctuation.
• Write in the first person, maintaining a positive tone.
• Include your name, position, firm name, etc. exactly as you wish it to appear.

 
Member News – Wins/Promotions/Etc.

• Maximum of 250 Words
• Include key details, including case name (if applicable), dates, etc.
• Provide a high-resolution head-shot or other image to accompany your news.
• Include your name, position, firm name, etc. exactly as you wish it to appear.
• Were you featured in the News? Provide us with a Link to the article, video or audio file.
• CDL welcomes personal news from our community; including birth and wedding announcements.

 
Member Contributed Articles

• Up to 2500 Words
• Submit a feature length article exploring you area of expertise, a successful defence strategy, or other topic of professional interest to Canadian Defence Lawyers. Preference will be given to CDL Members in good standing, academics, and sponsors.
• Use simple language, short sentences and make use of bullet points and other punctuation.
• Maintain a positive tone.
• Provide a high resolution head-shot or other image to accompany your article.
• Include your name, position, firm name, etc. exactly as you wish it to appear.

Each issue of Hearsay will be edited by the Executive Director, with support from a Guest Editor chosen from among the CDL membership.
