CDL Award Winners 

Canadian Defence Lawyers presented two prestigeous awards at the AGM on June 3 & 4, 2010

This year's Lee Samis Award winner is David T. Hashey, Q.C. of Cox & Palmer in Fredericton.





Born in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, David was admitted to the New Brunswick bar in 1963, having completed his education at the University of New Brunswick (B.B.A., 1960; B.C.L., 1963) where he was a Sir James Dunn Scholar. David is currently a member of the Law Society of New Brunswick, the Canadian Bar Association, the York-Sunbury Law Society, The Defense Research Institute, Fellow, American College of Trial Lawyers, and served as Past-Director and President of the Federation of Law Societies of Canada.
 





 


The first Richard B. Lindsay Outstanding Young Lawyer Award went to Kadey B.J. Schultz of Hughes Amys LLP in Toronto.

Since her call to the Bar in 2001, Kadey has appeared before all levels of courts in Ontario, and has conducted arbitrations and appeals before the Financial Services Commission of Ontario.

Kadey did her undergraduate studies at McGill University in Theatre & Performance, and Political Science, obtaining her B.A. in 1996. She then studied with the Faculty of Law at the University of Windsor, where she received the J.W. Whiteside Award for outstanding commitment and service to the Faculty of Law, Legal Profession and Community. Kadey obtained her LL.B. in 1999, and went on to complete her graduate work (LL.M.) at Osgoode Hall Law School in 2004.

For several years, Kadey taught the Introduction to Dispute Resolution course at Brock University where she continues as a guest lecturer She has a passion for education and teaching and has been a frequent instructor with the Ministry of Public Safety and Security and other organizations as part of her ADR practice, however she is best known for her accident benefits related lectures and publications with CDL, the OBA, LSUC, MTLA, OTLA and the OIAA.
 


Susan Gunter Hosts the Presidents of Ontario Lawyers' Associations 


In 2009-2010, for the first time, the Presidents of four Ontario lawyers' associations are women. This year, Canadian Defence Lawyers President, Susan Gunter of Dutton Brock LLP in Toronto, invited her colleagues to lunch to discuss common issues facing their organizations. Continued involvement with the representatives of these associations will be a hallmark of Canadian Defence Lawyers' efforts in years to come.
